Press Release

Friday 4th April 2014: The Joseph N. France Hospital is not being maintained to the best possible level. That is evidenced by the mounting complaints from patients, visitors and professional staff at the Joseph N. France Hospital. The signs of dilapidation are evident in the leaking roof at several wards, the nonfunctioning clocks and press buttons and the absence of disinfectant, soap, toilet paper and paper towels in a place where it is vital that you wash your hands. Too often patients have to send outside to buy medication vital to their recovery which the hospital does NOT have.

To add to the country woes the Haemodialysis Unit which was promised to the country since 2003 is yet to properly function. Reports indicate that the nurses recruited from the Philippines to operate that Unit are under utilized. The   contract of a nephrologist brought in from Cuba ended and one could count on one hand the number of haemodialysis performed by the specialist. The Hon Marcella Liburd is presiding over the deterioration of the health care system in the country. Over time higher charges were imposed on the services at Joseph N France Hospital. Healthcare has become unaffordable and an insensitive government charges VAT on medicine.

The problematic situation at Joseph N France Hospital is replicated at the Mary Charles Hospital in Molineaux. Despite public calls by Team Unity’s Leader Dr the Hon Timothy Harris for substantive upgrade in infrastructure and services delivery at Mary Charles Hospital, the Ministry of Health has failed to deliver the promised infrastructural development at Mary Charles Hospital. For years patients and staff complained about the leaking roof at the hospital, the unhinged doors, the broken down fences, the inadequacy of the spaces at the hospital and the removal of the ambulance which once was an important feature of the health services at Mary Charles Hospital. The Hospital is not up to standard nor does it meet the expectation of the people it is supposed to serve.

Team Unity promises to take control of healthcare in our country and improve the quality of healthcare delivery and physical plant. We will ensure the physical facilities are kept to a high standard. We will ensure that healthcare workers are well trained, well rewarded and highly motivated to do exceptional work. We will ensure healthcare is affordable. We will introduce a national health insurance plan for the country and make St. Kitts and Nevis a centre of excellence in healthcare delivery.
Team Unity will do this because our people matter. Team Unity will do this because we care. Team Unity will do this as part of our program of shared prosperity to all.
