Willet and Powell drafted for CPL 2014

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – FROM among the four selectees from St. Kitts and Nevis, Kieran Powell and Tonito Willet are the cricketers who were successful in the Draft for the 2014 Limacol Caribbean Premier Leagued, which was held in Jamaica on Thursday (Apr. 3).

     

    Powell, Willett, Jacques Taylor and Steve Liburd were among 100-plus cricketers from the Caribbean selected to be a part of the Draft; however, Taylor and Liburd went undrafted.

    Powell was retained by the Antigua Hawkbills which he played for in 2012 after being drafted in the fifth round, while Willett was drafted by the St. Lucia Zouks in the 12th round. 

    Powell and Willett will earn US$30 000 and US$5 000 respectively. 

    According to CPL’s website, Kevin Pietersen heads the list of international cricket stars selected by Limacol Caribbean Premier League franchises at the Draft held at Chris Gayle’s Triple Century Sports Bar in Kingston, Jamaica. 

    The former England captain and record run-scorer was drafted by St. Lucia Zouks and will be joined by the likes of Adam Voges from Australia (Jamaica Tallawahs) and Imran Nazir of Pakistan (Barbados Tridents).

    With six players being selected in the Draft, Pakistan will be the best-represented overseas country in the CPL with Mohammad Hafeez (Guyana Amazon Warriors), Ahmed Shehzad (Jamaica Tallawahs), Nasir Jamshed (Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel), Sohail Tanvir (St. Lucia Zouks), Imran Nazir (Barbados Tridents) and Saeed Ajmal (Antigua Hawksbills).

    Teams will have 24 hours to conduct any trade and the final line-up of players will be confirmed on Sunday (Apr. 13). 

    CPL returns in July and August 2014 when Jamaica Tallawahs will defend their title against the St. Lucia Zouks, Trinidad & Tobago Red Steel, Antigua Hawksbills, Guyana Amazon Warriors and Barbados Tridents.

    The Finals and Semi-Finals of the 2014 CPL will be hosted at Warner Park Cricket Stadium in August.
