Basseterre High School shines in Caribbean Black History Quiz

Mrs Rita Joseph on platform with Quiz contestants
By: Lorna Callender, Commentary

BASSETERRE HIGH SCHOOL (BHS) emerged winners in a keenly contested Caribbean Black History Quiz held on Saturday afternoon (5th April,  2014) at the Basseterre High School auditorium.

Mrs. Henry-Morton, Principal of the BHS proudly accepted on behalf of the School, the Winning trophy and a cheque for $1,200.00.

Runner-Up School was Verchild’s High School.  A trophy and cheque for $800.00 were gratefully received by teachers Mrs. Clarke (Principal) and Ms. Marcella Berkele, History teacher.

The Quiz Competition was composed of Individual Rounds and Team Rounds. The results and prizes for the Individuals were as follows:

    1.  Rikki Blake Brookes  (Basseterre High School) - Winning trophy and cheque for $300.00
    2.  Charis Herbert  (Basseterre High School) - Trophy for 1st Runner Up and cheque for $200.00
    3.  Cartel Forde  (Verchilds High School) - Trophy for 2nd Runner Up and cheque for $150.00

Kudos must go to the St. Kitts Nevis Returning Nationals Association (RNA) who initiated the Competition and who would like to make it an annual affair.  The Competition was the brainchild of Mrs. Rita Joseph, educator and Returning National. Together with her team of Mr. Calvin James, Coordinator , Mrs. Willa Franks-Liburd and Mrs. Agnes Crawford, they collaborated with the Ministry of Education to pull off this much needed educational event.

Dubbed the Caribbean Black History Family Quiz Competition, the exercise presented five areas of knowledge from which Quiz questions were drawn. They were Caribbean History, Sports, Music, Dance and Theatre and Religion.

The competition flowed easily under the capable guidance of retired educator Mrs. Rita Cable, Quizmaster assisted by Mrs. Willa Franks-Liburd. Judges were retired educators Mrs. Viola Jacobs, Mrs. Lorna Callender and returning national Dr. Jeremiah Halliday. Scorer was returning national Mrs. Irene Halliday.

Some themes and history timelines presented notable challenges causing many rings from the bell of time-keeper Mr. Quinton Morton. Some members of the audience wisely observed that a dossier of questions should be preserved for the Schools since such knowledge of local culture could not be elicited from any one book.

Many persons commented after the event that they had learnt much from the exercise and that it filled gaps in their knowledge. That, no doubt, was the idea behind the hosting of the event by the Returning Nationals Association, but alas only two of the five Secondary Schools that signed up to attend actually did.  We need to do much better than this and to encourage more balance in the development of our youth, especially when we see how well attended are the queen shows and pageants.

However, the Retuning Nationals were not to be deterred and hope that next year’s event will be bigger and better.

They particularly wish to thank the participating schools, their many sponsors and contributors as well as The Ministry of Education and ZIZ Broadcasting Corporation.
