BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - Former 100 metre World Champion and world record holder Asafa Powell was handed an 18-month suspension for the use of the banned substance Oxilofrine, according to the Jamaica Observer.
The Jamaican sprinter, 31, took the banned stimulant oxilofrine at last year's national championships but the suspension has been backdated so he will be able to compete again from December 20, 2014.
Powell, in a release, called the ruling "unfair and unjust" and said a legal supplement he took, Epiphany D1, was contaminated and plans to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Earlier this week, Sherone Simpson also received a ban by the Jamaican Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel.
Simpson, an Olympic relay gold medallist, is a training partner of Powell and took the same substance at the same event.
Another Jamaican, Olympic discus thrower Allison Randall, was also handed a two-year ban on Tuesday for using a prohibited diuretic.
