Family thanks Tyrell Williams Primary School for speedy contribution

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - AN account was opened at the St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla National Bank yesterday (Apr. 11) and persons interested in making donations to assist 11-year-old Vernel Thomas can do so through this medium.

The account number is 102 57423 and is under the name Mercia Flanders.

Thomas' family is seeking financial assistance from the public to have the child sent overseas to remove a tumour growing on her face.

The tumour was discovered growing on the left side of Thomas’ face and she will have to travel overseas in the near future to have it removed.

Thomas' aunt and guardian Mercia Flanders explained to SKNVibes that a bump on Thomas' face was first noticed in November 2013.

Thomas was taken to see a number of dentists on both St. Kitts and Nevis, but after a tooth extraction, X-rays, surgery and other tests, the root problem could not be found.

The aunt further explained that after having a CT scan done in Antigua, which was recommended by Dr. Wilkinson, and a biopsy upon Thomas' return to the Federation, it was discovered that the swelling was a tumour.

She indicated that Paediatrician Dr. Jacobs is working diligently alongside the family in trying to get an overseas clinic to accept the case, and so they have so far gotten responses from Panama and New Orleans but are still awaiting word as to which of the two clinics would accept Thomas for treatment.

Financially, Flanders disclosed that the family is still awaiting an official quotation but was informed that costs might be over US$30 000.

She disclosed that the family is not financially endowed and is appealing to the public to assist in any way possible, noting that any form of help, no matter how small, would go a long way in aiding the removal of Thomas' tumour.

Flanders would like to publicly thank the principal, teachers, students and parents of the Tyrell Williams Primary School for the interest shown and speedy assistance they have so far provided to Thomas.

"They were of much help and they were also the first to assist, and I just want to say a big thank you. What they did was greatly appreciated."

Mercia Flanders can be contacted at (869) 665-0103 and any form of assistance is welcomed.
