Monday, April 14, 2014 - The Conservation and Fisheries Department is inviting all persons to ‘Wear Green and Go Green” in territorial solidarity for Earth Day, Tuesday, April 22.

Environmental Officer of the Conservation and Fisheries Department, Mrs. Grenelvia Chalwell-Farrington, said that the aim is not only to wear green but to influence persons into “being greener.”

“Through dressing in the colour green we hope to increase awareness of green lifestyles and lifestyle changes. We can all make little adjustments in our routine to produce less waste and reduce our carbon footprint.”

She added, “It is our hope that persons stop and ask us, ‘Why green? Why today?’ and we can reply and say ‘it is because we want to be greener and we are hoping that you join us!’ ”

In addition to wearing green, the Department of Conservation and Fisheries is inviting all churches, organisations, civic groups and or interested individuals to join in a coastal clean-up effort along the Road Town coastline including; Waterfront, Baugher's Bay and the Queen Elizabeth II Park on April 22 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Persons are encouraged to call the Conservation and Fisheries Department for more information on the clean-up or for a list of green tips at 494-3429 or 494-3701 extension 5555/5551. Persons may also visit the office located on the 2nd floor of the Quastisky Building in Road Town.

Earth Day was first celebrated in 1970, and is now held annually on April 22. Today, Earth Day is coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network and activities are held worldwide to demonstrate support for environmental protection.

The Department of Conservation and Fisheries supports Earth Day and the promotion of green initiatives and lifestyle changes to combat pollution and the effects of climate change.
