BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, April 15th 2014 (CUOPM) – A senior Antigua and Barbuda parliamentarian has showered praise on St. Kitts and Nevis’ Prime Minister the Right Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas has for his service, dedication, vision, intellect and hard work in the vineyards for the past 25 years as a Parliamentarian and soon to be 20 years as Prime Minister.

Former Minister of Finance, the Hon. Asot Michael was at the time bringing fraternal greetings on behalf of the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party and the Political Leader and Leader of the Opposition, the Honourable Gaston Browne to Dr. Douglas during  a “Red and Silver Dinner” to mark the occasion.

He told the large gathering assembled at Carambola  that he first met Prime Minister Douglas many years ago, when “I was then a young lad, not even in government as yet, he was not Prime Minister as yet but I had the opportunity to meet him at the residence of the then Prime Minister Lester Bird in Antigua.”

Mr. Michael said some years later when he became Chief of Staff to Lester Bird in December of 1997,  his first official encounter with Dr. Denzil Douglas was when Lester Bird sent him to represent Antigua in Scotland, as the Junior Minister of Finance.

“I had the opportunity to dialogue with Prime Minister Douglas on the international stage and I was proud. Not only proud as a young Antiguan and a young Antiguan senator and politician, but as a man from the Caribbean, when I saw how Dr. Denzil Douglas represented not only the twin island Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, but he spoke for the entire Caribbean and CARICOM region,” said Mr. Michael.

“Since then I have had many opportunities both in and out of government to travel at meetings, at international fora and to see and witness first hand, the level of maturity, the level of intellect, foresight, vision, that this man has, not just for St. Kitts and Nevis, but for the entire Caribbean,” said Mr. Michael.

In his tribute, Mr. Michael noted that a few years ago, “Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth thought it fit to make Denzil Douglas one of Her Majesty’s Privy Councillors and to embrace upon him, the title of Right Honourable.”

“Dr. Denzil Douglas, and I speak here tonight uncontroverted, irrefutable evidence, he is respected not just among Kittitians and Nevisians but across all of the waters of the Caribbean Sea by all the people of the Caribbean and all of the Leaders of the Caribbean and more so on the international stage, as he has done so much for HIV and AIDS internationally,” said the Antigua and Barbuda MP.

He concluded: “I applaud you sir for your hard sterling work. For 25 years, you have laboured as a Parliamentarian in the vineyard and you have given every single day of your time, your energy, your spirit and your manhood to the people of your beloved Constituency and the people of your federation. You have to be admired and I admire you as a young politician and I want to say indeed you are my mentor. I would like to emulate you one day and I hope that I could fit in those very small shoes because they are very big indeed.

Mr.  Prime Minister, tonight is your night. It is your night to celebrate with your people. It is your night to celebrate with the entire Caribbean and the entire Caribbean is celebrating with you.”
