We can’t feel the economic growth says Richards

The Hon. Shawn Richards

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - OPPOSITION MP the Hon. Shawn K. Richards has declared that whatever growth may have taken place in the Federation over the past months is of no comfort to the ordinary man as the effects of such are yet intangible.

Richards - a Team Unity member - was one of the speakers appearing on that group’s political platform on Friday (Apr. 18). And during his presentation he suggested that he had some difficulty understanding how the recent news of the Federation’s stationary inflation rate is good news for the citizens and residents of St. Christopher and Nevis.

“This week, I heard a news item on one of our local radio stations indicating that the IMF has given St. Kitts and Nevis some type of good report and, as expected, the illegitimate administration making all sort of boast and all sort of story about this report. I understand that they say in the report...that inflation in St. Kitts and Nevis has remained stable. And so you supposed to feel good about that.

“...If you go into the bank last year to buy a house and the bank said to you last year the house costs $300 000 and you can’t afford to buy the house, the house (is) advertised again this year for the same $300 000, your salary ain’t move and you still can’t afford to buy the house. What good is it to you to say to you that the price of the house ain’t increase? It makes a difference to you? Well, that is what Denzil Douglas wants you to be happy about...”

Providing other examples, Richards spoke of the inability of some to afford basic necessities, including electricity and groceries.

“You go into the supermarkets and you going in there every day, every week; you could not afford to buy food last year, you still can’t afford to buy food this year, so to come to me and say to me, ‘Well, inflation hasn’t moved.’ It still does not mean anything to me because ah still cannot afford to pay for basic necessities in this country. So when you making the boast that there has been growth in this country, you must also explain that to persons.

“If in 2010 you had negative growth...2011it went down again, 2012 it gone down again, 2013 it gone down again, it come up a little bit in 2014, you supposed to be happy about that? When you talk about growth, growth must impact people.”
