BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE Federation’s medallists at the recently concluded CARIFTA Games held in Martinique have been lauded for their accomplishments by Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas.

The three medallists are Kristal Liburd who improved her bronze medal from last year to silver in the Girls Under-18 Long Jump with a leap of 6.01 metres; Tahir Jefferson in the Boys Under-20 High Jump tied for bronze with Bahamian Laquan Nairn in a distance of two metres; and the experienced Adrian Williams who won a bronze medal in the Boys Under-20 Javelin with a throw of 64.49 metres.

Speaking on his weekly radio programmes ‘Ask the PM’ on Tuesday (Apr. 22), Dr. Douglas commended the athletes for their determination and focus.

“Our young people are at it again setting goals, moving towards those goals with a tremendous focus and determination and distinguishing themselves from other young people from far more populous nations.

“Whenever St. Kitts and Nevis competes regionally or internationally, and whenever we come out it is always important for us to remember that we are distinguishing ourselves among countries that have far larger populations from which to select their representatives... And so our accomplishments are therefore more noteworthy.”

He then congratulated the athletes who were successful in attaining medals.

“In light of that therefore, I know everyone would like me on their behalf to congratulate Ms. Krystal Liburd, Mr. Tahir Jefferson and Mr. Adrian Williams, all of whom headed off to Martinique and already won medals.

“Warmest congratulations to them all. May their success incite and inspire young people who, like our young athletes, are striving to master their own areas of endeavour.

“Nothing succeeds like faith and hard work, and I hope our young people will always remember this.”
