    April 24, 2014 -  In keeping with its commitment to enhance the Territory’s cruise tourism product through the development of the existing cruise pier, the Government of the Virgin Islands through the BVI Ports Authority (BVIPA) signed a contract with IDL Projects Inc./Meridian Construction Company Ltd., to extend, strengthen and widen the cruise pier. 

     

    During the signing on April 22, , Minister for Communications and Works, Honourable Mark Vanterpool in his remarks referred to the day as a ‘red letter day’ in the history of the Virgin Islands. He said that Government is anxious to start welcoming the over 425,000 passengers annually which is promised through a 15 year agreement with Disney Cruise Line and Norwegian Cruise Line. 

    He further stated that the Territory is also preparing for the 100,000 plus passengers that will come via other cruise lines, for a total in excess of 500,000 cruise passengers.

     “I cannot over-emphasise, just how important the British Virgin Islands Cruise Terminal Pier and Park, is, to our future growth and development,” Minister Vanterpool said, adding, “This is a matter of securing the bread and butter of our entrepreneurs in the Territory such as taxi operators, tour operators, vendors, restaurateurs and the business community overall, as well as our families and friends.”

    The contract was signed to the tune of $30, 742,240 by Chairman of the BVIPA’s Board, Mr. J. Edward de Castro and BVIPA’s Managing Director, Mr. Claude Skelton Cline and witnessed by the Premier and Minister of Finance, Dr. the Honourable D. Orlando Smith, OBE and Minister for Communications and Works, Honourable Mark Vanterpool with President of IDL Projects president, Mr. Dennis Schwab and founder of Meridian Construction Company Ltd., Mr. Percy Rhoden. . 

    The scope of works for the marine development includes, dredging the harbour for turn bains, navigational channels and berthing on both sides of the pier; lengthening the existing dock, from 230 linear metres or 755 ft to 396 linear metres or 1299 ft; widening the existing dock, from 9.9 metres or 32 ft to 13.7 metres or 45 ft; building additional mooring dolphins along both sides; adding a new, mono-lithic deck, to the widened pier.

    In pledging his commitment to the success of the project, Minister Vanterpool said, “I assure you that I will do my best with our team to ensure that this major infrastructural development is undertaken to the highest standards possible for the people of the Virgin Islands.”

    The expected completion date for the cruise pier is September of 2015. In addition to the marine development, the landside will be developed to accommodate commercial, retail, entertainment and green spaces.

    The cruise pier development promises a unique and modern cruise pier facility that is environmentally compatible and sustainable, that delivers a memorable and world-class experience.
