Sandy Point flag makes debut at Black San’ Mas

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - SANDY POINT is a town that has always been known for the pride and dignity of its people exude about the community wherever they go. And it is that pride, dignity and respect for the town that has led to a one of a kind creation.

Making its debut at Sandy Point's community festival Black San’ Bang-a-Lang was the town's very flag, which was depicted on the many T-shirts worn at the SPIRIT-organised festival during the Las’ Lap Fete.

The flag maintains the colours and meaning of the National Flag but with a twist in its design. And according to its creator Tresil Twells, "it was designed that way so as to not pull away from St. Kitts and Nevis, but to highlight the individuality and pride of the Sandy Point people".

Twells hails from Sandy Point but currently resides in Canada and, in an exclusive interview with SKNVibes, noted that he still carries the pride that Sandy Pointers are known for.

He explained that the idea of the flag was birthed from him wanting to create something that could represent his hometown and also as a means of giving Sandy Pointers "another thing to be proud of".

He said the idea was one he had two years ago but never “put pencil to paper” until two months ago.

"I've always wondered how I could contribute to my hometown of Sandy Point, considering the fact that I have been living overseas for so long. I wanted to do something that would benefit every Sandy Pointer; something we could all be proud of and the creation of a flag came to mind.

"I've had this idea for about two years and the thought of drawing it came on and off for those two years. About two months ago I was at work and I had an idea and I just drew it on a piece of paper. Later that day, when I got home, I designed it on the computer and I liked it."

Twells told SKNVibes that he sent the design to a few family members and friends for their feedback and they immediately fell in love with it.

He then explained that his uncle sent the photo to the SPIRIT Executive body, which then made the decision to introduce the flag during the Last Lap Fete.

He further explained that the flag is one that would represent the town of Sandy Point to make the bold statement that "I am a Sandy Pointer".

"I wanted to create something that Sandy Pointers would love and appreciate. Something we could use...and with this flag we could represent Sandy Point with it and continue to show our 'SP' pride."

The flag was boldly displayed throughout Sandy Point on Saturday (Apr. 26) at the Black San’ last Lap Fete on T-shirts with #POINT MADE under it.

Sandy Point is the first community to have its own flag and its people will no doubt represent their town everywhere with this new creation.
