May 2, 2014 - The Ministry of Health and the National AIDS programme in collaboration with Scotia Bank are in the process of planning activities for Caribbean Regional Testing Day 2014 which will be observed on Friday 13 and Friday 27 June under the theme “Funtestic Friday.”

National AIDS Coordinator, Ms. Noelene Clarke told the Department of Information and Public Relations that the objective of Regional Testing Day is to heighten public awareness on the critical importance of voluntary counselling and testing in preventing the spread of HIV infection and to mobilize the population to access testing and prevention services in the Virgin Islands.

“This year we have started the planning process early because we want to ensure maximum participation. We believe that people who know their HIV status are empowered to make good decisions regarding keeping their status negative and for those who test positive it will allow them to get the necessary treatment, care and support that can enable them to live longer lives.

Mrs. Clarke reported that no positive HIV result has been received by the Ministry of Health and Social development, so far for 2014. She attributes this to the enhanced level of awareness by many persons in the community as well as an increasing number of persons being proactive about having an HIV test done.

”It is vital that people know their HIV status and this is a means of giving persons an opportunity to take advantage of free testing.  This year’s Regional Testing Day activities will be executed on Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada and Jost Van Dyke,” Mrs. Clarke noted.

HIV counselling and testing will be offered at the Anegada Clinic in the Settlement, Anegada and at the Jost Van Dyke Clinic in Great Harbour.

In addition two Health and wellness expos will be held, the first, on Friday, June 13 at Scotia Bank’s Virgin Gorda Branch located in the Valley and the other will be held on Friday, June 27 at the Noel Lloyd Positive Action Movement Park.  All activities will take place between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

“We want people to mark their calendars, come out and support Caribbean Regional Testing Day Activities,” Mrs. Clarke concluded.

The National AIDS programme is committed to mitigating the health and socio-economic impact of HIV/AIDS on individuals, families and communities of the Virgin Islands.
