LPM welcomes debt ceiling but admonishes the prime minister

CASTRIES, St Lucia (May 5, 2014) – The Lucian People’s Movement (LPM) wishes to applaud Dr Kenny Anthony for finally concluding that the LPM was right when, on October 1, 2012, it proposed that a debt ceiling was required to limit the amount of money that his administration and all future governments borrow in the name of the country.

Speaking on behalf of the LPM, Melanius Alphonse stated that the country could have been better served, from as far back as a year and a half ago, if only Dr Anthony and his government had recognised that the size of a political organisation, or the fact that it may not have performed sufficiently well to capture seats in the last poll, does not in any way inhibit it from having an analytical mindset or the ability to clearly articulate new policies, which his government may wish to consider or adopt in the interest of the people of Saint Lucia.
Winning an election is one thing, but possessing the knowledge and natural intelligence to formulate progressive ideas and policies for the kind of governance which is required to move Saint Lucia forward is not necessarily exclusive to only the men and women who are able to win a popularity contest through the ballot box.

Therefore, to continue to promote an arrogant and elitist policy, which seems to suggest that the LPM does not have a role to play in the political and economic discourse of the country, or to turn a deaf ear to its advice on foreign policy, the economy, education, crime, and so forth, does more harm to the future prospects of the nation than it does to the LPM.

However, while Alphonse insisted that the LPM has promised to throw its full support behind the government regarding the implementation of a debt ceiling, which should serve as a financial barometer to limit our addiction to borrowing, he expressed his worry that the introduction of such a legislation would not make much sense if the amount to be borrowed annually is determined at the sole discretion of the government, which could then use its parliamentary majority to rubber-stamp and sideline any effort by the opposition to restrict its ability to borrow beyond what the country is able to repay
