BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – IT was a night of glamour and a few mishaps at the 2014 Miss Green Valley Pageant. But in the end, a young woman with a passion for change in the Cayon community walked away an admirable queen.

The young lady is no other than the beautiful Subway-sponsored Vonyea Akers, who tallied 727 points to be crowned Miss Green Valley 2014.

The pageant, which was held at Maynard’s Park in Lower Cayon on Friday (Jun. 6), got off to a very disappointing start, some 90 minutes after its scheduled time, with the five contestants seemingly lacking coordination as they entered the stage dancing to the tune that signalled the Fanfare and Introductory segment.

This resulted in a verbal confrontation among the contestants, which did not go unnoticed by the hundreds of attendees who found the situation to be disorganised but very amusing.

As one patron posited, “It seems as though these girls had no time for rehearsals. Look how they are bumping into each other!”

During the Introductory Speech, Production Number, Swimwear, Creative Wear, Talent, Evening Gown and Final Question segments, Akers was the clearly the  crowd’s favourite. She also oozed a very high degree of confidence and style when she majestically strutted the runway.

With her platform of ‘Ending Crime and Violence in her Community’, Akers, throughout the competition, incessantly suggested to those in attendance that the hostile and negative behaviour perpetrated by some elements in Cayon could only end if people in the community worked together.

In addition to carting off the coveted crown, Akers also won the awards for Best Introductory Speech, Best Creative Wear, Best Talent and Best Evening Gown. She also adjudged Miss Photogenic.

Zarema Pemberton copped the First Runner-up position with 670.5 points and was adjudged Best Production Number and Best Swimwear, while Caira Griffin, with 658.5 points, took the Second Runner-up spot and Best Interview as well as Miss Congeniality.
