OSCORA small food business shines in Keys community

Owner of OSCARA - Carl Hewlett

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts –- THE father of popular Kittitian entertainer Nicha B is making a name for himself in the Keys area with his small ‘ital’ food business called OSCORA.

Carl Hewlett, owner of OSCORO, serves residents of the small Keys community and some of his faithful customers who travel tall distances, with his ital foods and fruit juices on a daily basis, with the exception of weekends.

SKNVibes Business recently met the energetic Hewlett at his small food outlet on his farm along the Island’s Main Road in Keys Village.

The 53-year-old entrepreneur told this agency that making his foods requires him working late at nights and early mornings to meet the demands of his mid-day customers.
“We sell most vegetarian foods, such as vegetable rice and vegetable soups, as well as cook-up rice with vegetables and also with chunks. We also sell fruit juices.

“Usually, my day starts at 4:00 a.m., because I have to make the juices which take some time to complete. Then I get prepared to cook. I have to finish for 12:00 p.m. because there are people who come here at that time to get their food.”

Recounting how he entered into the food business, Hewlett explained that it is his love for gardening which brought about the initiative of establishing an all-organic diet fast food snackette.

“We used to do like gardening and farming in the hills and then we come out and apply to the government for this land to do agriculture. Well, agriculture was selling slowly and we decided to turn it into cooking.”

He noted that up until 2010 he was an agriculturist, operating a farm in the mountain at Phillip’s, before acquiring the current land on which he operates.

The futuristic-thinking father of three has ventured into other avenues apart from farming and cooking.

His love for fish remained with him throughout his life and, after acquiring the farmland, he began operating a small freshwater aquarium fish farm.

He added that the market for his fish and the aquarium he makes is very profitable.
Hewlett also does wood sculpting and has created many pieces which he “sells from time to time”.

“We also import fish and so, but what happened is that we used to be on the opposite side this business where I live, and we are now transferring them from there. We have a lot more ponds in the yard of my home.

“Fish is a big business thing! This is really a big business. I have been doing this for a number of years now.”

Hewlett’s utilises the area aback his shop and the large spaces on both sides of it to plant fruit trees and vegetables, which he uses to make his foods and juices.

He stated that it was a challenge raising three children with his wife but it is worth the effort, adding that maybe in the future his children would be able to follow in his footsteps.
