Basseterre, St. Kitts, June 17, 2014 (SKNIS) -- Information and Communication Technology (ICT) stakeholders in St. Kitts and Nevis will meet on Thursday (June 19) to review strategies to strengthen and preserve the confidentiality, integrity and availability of information within the public sector.
This will be done at a two-day workshop dubbed Information Security Management Workshop to be convened at the Conference Room of Her Majesty’s Customs and Excise Department. Pierre Bowrin, Government’s ICT Policy Advisor, Innovation and Industry Unit, explained that given the importance of information which he described as “the lifeblood of all organizations” it is important to protect against growing global threats. He also cited increasing pressure from legal and regulatory authorities and stressed that it is vital for organizations to protect information assets.
“A proven solution is the adoption of an Information Security Management System (ISMS) which meets the requirements of the International Standards Organization (ISO),” Mr. Bowrin said, noting that the aim is to achieve the ISO 27001 standard. “The ISO standard is designed to propose appropriate security controls to protect information assets and give full confidence to constituents and potential investors regarding privacy and data protection.”
The Department of Information Technology organised the workshop in collaboration with the OECS Electronic Government for Regional Integration Project (EGRIP) and the Organization of American States (OAS).
