Harris: Time of election doesn’t matter…PM Douglas on losing end

Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris
By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – ALTHOUGH constitutionally due by early 2015, Leader of the Unity Construct Dr. the Hon. Timothy S. Harris said he believes the next General Elections for St. Kitts and Nevis would be held in 2014.

But whether it is held in 2014 or 2015, Dr. Harris has expressed his view that “it really doesn’t matter” because “time is not on Dr. Douglas side”.

While addressing the issue in an interview with SKNVibes, Dr. Harris – the Parliamentary Representative for Constituency Number Seven – made extensive reference to comments made by Barbadian Pollster Peter Wichkam about his view on the results of the upcoming elections.

According to WINNFM, Wickham said…“The bigger issue which I can answer for you very easily, you need to have an election in St. Kits and Nevis. Whether you have it now or later is a matter you can internally discuss, but I don't think anyone would disagree that you need to have an election to settle the political issues that are on the table. But I honestly don't think that the timing of it is going to make a huge difference. I think that the outcome will be the same regardless!"

According to Harris’ interpretation of Wickham’s comments, “he sent a clear message to Dr. Douglas, time will not help you…”

Dr. Harris opined that Prime Minister Dr. Douglas is trying to buy time which, according to him, is an act in futility.

“Dr. Douglas has on four occasions said to the public: ‘We are not ready, we need more time. Time will help our candidates to get ready.’ He said that down at Port Zante. Over at the conference this year, again he said to the people: ‘We are not ready, we need more time…’

“The Labour Party is not in a state of readiness, notwithstanding they have been spending like drunken sailor men in effort to buy votes in an effort to fix everything that they think they have neglected for the last four years in office and to buy love and attention. By their own words, they are not ready.”

Again, making reference to Wickham’s comments and expressing his interpretation thereof, the Unity Leader said most of the people of the Federation are of the view that the country needs a new leader.

“And that is why it is more than symbolic that the chief pollster for the government since 1995, Peter Wickham has said to the government time will not make a difference in the outcome. You must bear in mind that Peter has been polling St. Kitts and Nevis on behalf of the government and, from his reading of them, what he has said is that time will not make a difference in the outcome.

“The majority of people of St. Kitts and Nevis have made up their mind that Douglas has been at the crease for too long. Twenty years of our lives as Leader of the country…it is time for something fresh and different. And the people will not allow the country’s reputation to continue being damaged in the way it is being damaged…”
