Athletes promise ‘special’ performance tomorrow at National

Athletes pose with fans on Fort Street

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - SOME of the Federation’s top athletes slated to participate at the 2014 National Invitational and Club Championships are promising fireworks on the track at the Silver Jubilee Stadium.

The athletes were on Fort Street yesterday afternoon (Jun. 20) giving their fans opportunities to interact with them in the lead up to the meet scheduled for tomorrow (Jun. 22).

Speaking on Fort Street, defending 100 and 200 meters champion and member of the 4x200m silver medal winning team, Antoine Adams, who is confident of a three-peat, reminded the public of what happened last year in the 100m and claimed a repeat of that performance is on the card.

“The hundred metres race last year was pretty historical. This year, you never know, we might have the first ever sub-10 seconds and sub-20 seconds performance in St. Kitts,” Adams said.

Another member of the successful 4x200m team, Alistair Clarke also promised something special tomorrow.

“We have been training hard and you might see something special on Sunday. We have been training really, really hard. It had days when I got home I could not even shower, just had to go straight to bed. So you need to come out and see what we really put in the work to do.”

Brijesh Lawrence, also of the 4x200m side, promised his best performance and is looking to have a personal best in the 100 and 200m.

“My predictions for myself is that I am going to give the absolute best I can give. I have been training for this meet all year.

“I am ready to hit it hard this Sunday. The other guys are going to be ready and I am excited. My goals are to PB (Personal Best) and make the Commonwealth team and run my hardest.”

Shenel Crooke was the lone female representative seen yesterday, but assured that the others would be making a comeback at this weekend’s meet.

“We have been hearing about the boys all the time. This year we will be showing that even the girls are capable of making a splash at the Championships. We are coming out this weekend to show you what we have been doing all year. With the right conditions and being injury free, who knows what will happen.”

Last year the National Invitational and Club Championships saw the greatest performance at the Silver Jubilee Stadium in the 100m when Antoine Adams and Jason Rogers wowed the crowd, as they both clocked 10:00 seconds flat in the 100m Men’s Senior (open) ahead of Brijesh Lawrence, Allistar Clarke and Delwayne Delaney.

In what was certainly the most exciting race of the day, the athletes had to be separated by the third decimal point.
