BVI Celebrates 25 Years Of Observance Of Fisherman’s Day

    Monday, June 23, 2014 - 3:12pm - This year’s Fisherman’s Day theme is; “Creating Opportunities to Maintain a Healthy Fishery,” in observance of 25 years of celebrating Fisherman’s Day in the Territory.

     

    Fisheries Officer of the Conservation and Fisheries Department and Coordinator of Fisherman’s Day, Mr. Samuel Davies said that Fisherman’s Day is expected to be very exciting this year and will include pre-Fisherman’s Day activities on Sunday, June 29.

    He said, “Every year we have worked towards increasing community attendance, and including activities for all ages. This year, as we celebrate 25-years of Fisherman’s Day, we have encompassed two days and we want to invite one and all to come out to the festivities.”

    He added, “Fisherman’s Day is not only about fun and excitement on the beach, but more importantly; celebrating our tradition of Virgin Islands fishing. Everyone is invited to come and enjoy the beach, the activities and to learn something about the environment and our fisheries’ cultural heritage.”

    Fisherman’s Day activities begin on Sunday, June 29 with the annual two-day Fishing tournament at 4:00 a.m. The general activities begin at 2:00 p.m. with entertainment provided by local DJs and Show Time Band. On Monday, June 30, the Fishing tournament continues along with several activities beginning at 11:00 a.m., including the; fashion show, soldier-crab races for children, live Vendor’s BBQ Cook-off; and entertainment by local DJs and Venemous Poizon Band. Persons are also encouraged to take part in the Sand-Shark (Sand Sculpture) competition for categories; ages 5 to 11, and ages 12 and older, with cash prizes.

    Fisherman’s Day 2014 will include commemorative t-shirts on sale. For information on T-shirts or registration for the fishing tournament, persons may call 468-2700 or 544-6262.

    The Ministry of Natural Resources and Labour seeks to ensure that the environment is well managed, protected and preserved to maintain the unique ecological features and natural beauty of the Virgin Islands.
