St. Kitts and Nevis to be promoted in new markets

Her Excellency Ambassador Rosalyn Hazelle

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts –- AS the Federation boasts of an increase in tourist arrivals during the first five months of 2014, the St. Kitts Investment Promotion Agency (SKIPA) is seeking to venture into new markets to promote the country.

This was revealed by Chief Executive Officer of SKIPA Ambassador Roslyn Hazelle, who told SKNVibes that her agency works hand-in-hand with the Tourism Ministry in promoting the Federation.

The Ambassador stated that beginning this year, Canada is one of the new markets they would be seeking to enter, adding that this new market would be one of several they are hoping to penetrate to have visitors come to the Federation.

She explained that it would be a great opportunity to promote the Federation as a tourist destination and a business spot for investors.

“We are looking at other markets such as Canada and, hopefully with our plans, we are hoping to go there in the Fall to promote St. Kitts and also as a place to visit.  Basically, our approach is to be out there and be up front and promote St Kitts.”

However, before this can be done, the Ambassador indicated that she has to address a certain issue affecting the promotion of the Federation as a tourist destination, which she stated is negativity from investors and tourists when it comes to the perception of crime.

“We don’t really have any challenge per say. We would be faced with questions! Some of the things that we are faced with sometimes are some of the negatives that we speak to. Sometimes an investor may ask us about our crime level and I would respond to it because crime, murders and killing for someone not from here has a different concept.”

She however posited that unlike other countries around the world, St. Kits does not have a high crime rate, whereby “every three seconds someone is raped like in a North American city or we are talking about crime in that every 30 seconds someone is mugged, or I cannot walk on the street”.

“I’m equipped to respond to those kinds of queries. Outside of that, people ask how easy is it to come to St. Kitts,” she added.

According to the Ambassador, the promotion agency would be fostering its partnership with the Tourism Authority since the tourism product works in close relation with the promotions for investors.

“We would continue to do activities! We are at the moment looking to partner and work closely with the Tourism Authority because, as I mentioned before, we at the same time as they are promoting visitors. They in their own way are promoting investment as well, and we see that as a complementary role. We see the promotion of St. Kitts, in terms of our tourism product, overlaps with promotion in terms of an investment climate as well, and we are going to be working to attend some of the tourism marketing activities alongside the Tourism Authority.”
