BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – IN an effort to be centrally located and to be closer to supporters as well as to all other people in the twin-island Federation, in a setting termed a home away from home, Team Unity opened its Campaign Headquarters with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony.
The launching of the tri-party’s Campaign Headquarters, also termed Command Center, took place yesterday afternoon (Jun. 25) on Fort Street in Basseterre.
Making his presentation at the Ceremony, Prime Ministerial Candidate and Leader of the Unity Construct, Dr. Timothy Harris explained that the Headquarters is a place and symbol of the party’s commitment to their “forebears to organise for action”.
“And so we gather at this place, at this hour, on this day, in this year of our Lord to open Team Unity’s Campaign Headquarters. Our Headquarters, Shawn calls it the People’s Command Center, serves as a symbol of our commitment to our forebears to organise for action, to marshal the will and resources of the people of St. Kitts and Nevis, resolute in their demand for an immediate change of course.”
Dr. Harris outlined that the party was formed out of the desire of the people, the way in which politics is being practiced in the Federation, to bring about a change and to create a lasting relation between the two islands.
“…for better and more harmonious relations between the people of St. Kitts and the people of Nevis; for a better and more equitable working arrangement between the Nevis Island Administration and the Federal government, based on respect, trust and recognition of the obligations of higher public office; for a better Constitution and appreciation of our shared citizenship.”
In what most onlookers said was a campaign speech rather than an opening ceremony presentation, Dr. Harris stated that Team Unity sees a serious need for change in several areas in the Federation, including jobs creation, a robust economy, better working conditions and a sound healthcare system.
“Team Unity was born out of a desperate need for better economy; for better education; for a better national security plan and fight against crime; for a better poverty eradication effort; for a better and more equitable investment climate for locals and foreigners; for a better Citizenship by Investment Programme; for better management of the public debt; for better management of our scarce land resources; for better housing. The people of this country know that if we come together at this critical juncture in our short history we will be better.”
He also told the gathering that Team Unity’s main aim is to serve the people of the Federation.
“Team Unity is here for and to serve you. Your goals are our goals, your ideas are our ideas, and your vision is our vision. We want what you want…peace, stability, decency, good governance, democracy, opportunity and prosperity for all in our beloved St. Kitts and Nevis.”
Dr. Harris thanked the people present for going out to support the launch and promised that his team, which comprises members of his People’s Labour Party, the People’s Action Movement and the Concerned Citizens Movement, would be at the Headquarters to welcome all those with problems.
“I want to thank all of you for all your support and I welcome you to this your new home away from home, our Campaign Headquarters. I say to you that the people who will serve in this office will offer professional and confidential service. So if you have any information that will help our cause and our country's development, come here to Team Unity’s office.
“If you want to check that your name is on the voters list, whether you are in Half Way Tree or Phillips, or Cayon or Conaree or St. Peters, come here at our office, somebody will be able to give you that information.
“If you want to get information about any event organised by Team Unity, like our boat ride this coming Sunday for example, or whether or not Dawn will be praying at our next meeting, come right here at Team Unity’s office. And if you want to volunteer to work in any constituency or at the national level, come right here and let us know. And even if it is that you want to share a daily prayer, we welcome you to our office.”
