BASSETERRE, St Kitts - KITTITIAN all-rounder Jeremiah Louis has been named one of four U-19 players to be called up for the Antigua Hawksbills training camp for the 2014 Limacol Caribbean Premier League.

The 18-year-old is scheduled to depart the Federation today (July 1) for Antigua and will become the first Kittitian to be associated with a CPL franchise.

In a sit down interview with SKNVibes Sports, Louis disclosed how grateful he is for the opportunity and is aiming to make his family and country proud.

“Well, I am truly grateful in being considered as one of the four Leeward Islands U-19 players to be called up to the Antigua Hawksbills Camp. I will be trying my best to make St. Kitts proud, my family proud and also myself proud.”

He then highlighted what he plans to achieve during the camp.

“My first achievement in going to this camp is to try and make the Hawksbills team. They say the four U-19 players are just going to the camp and will not be playing, but I would try my utmost to perform in the camp and try to make the team.”

Louis revealed what his training regime was like in the build-up to the camp.

“I have been training since the end of the previous West Indies U-19 Tournament. I have been training every afternoon, doing some resistance running, netballs throws, netball slams and also strengthening my shoulders. Basically, we have been doing everything that a fast bowler does to prepare himself for a tournament.”

He also gave some background into his cricket career

“I have been playing cricket all my life. I started playing cricket since I was five. I played at all junior levels for St. Kitts...U-13, U-15, U-17 and U-19. I also played for the Leeward Islands U-15, U-17 and U-19. I also represented St. Kitts at the senior level and was selected for the Leeward Islands senior camp in February.”

The Taylor’s Village resident also outlined some of his role models he would like to emulate.

“Some of my role models in cricket are Bret Lee; I like to see how he approaches the crease when bowling. I would like to adapt his style. I also like Jacque Kallis for his all-round ability. He bowls at a high pace and also has the ability to bat for long periods. I also like Sachin Tendulkar for his consistency in scoring runs and being one the best batsmen the world has ever seen.”

He then identified some of his better moments experienced as a cricketer.

“Last year I participated in the West Indies U-19 Tournament and I won a game for the Leewards against Barbados. In that tournament I achieved the fourth most runs in the competition and I also had the third most wickets.

“This year I also attended the Leeward Islands camp in February but, unfortunately, I did not make the side.”

A last wicket partnership of 146 runs between Louis and Tristan Hanley, both of St. Kitts, helped the Leeward Islands U-19 to chase down a daunting 300-run winning target set by Barbados in Conaree last year.

Louis ended on 69 not out as Leewards got home safely at 301 for nine.

He also has some projections for the future.

“Two years down the road I will try to be the best that I can be and try to perform, as well as try to do everything in my ability to make it to the top.”

SKNVibes Sports also spoke with the proud father, Jerimiah Louis Sr., who is very appreciative of his son’s opportunity.

“I am very grateful and thankful more for him than anything else. Since he was a baby he was always very active.

“When he graduated from the Tucker Clarke Primary School he got the award for Sportsman of the Year. And I remember two years ago there was the Giant Malt High School Tournament and he was MVP. So I am very grateful that he got the opportunity, and he needs to go out there and make himself proud, represent his family well and also his country.”

He also hopes that his son could impress well enough to earn a spot on the Hawksbills roster, if not this year by next year, and is expecting other young cricketers to be motivated from this call-up.

“Also from a national point of view, he is also the first Kittitian associated with a CPL franchise. I hope that he could find favour with the selectors and be in the team...if not this year, maybe next year. I hope that this can be used as a motivation that other young Kittitian cricketers could also perform and get the opportunity to showcase their talent on the big stage.”

The senior Louis was also asked about his other sons who are involved in the sports discipline.

“I have other sons playing cricket. I have Jerrikson Louis who is two years younger than him. He was selected to play in the Leeward Islands U-17 team. And I also have Jerrilious who is 13-years-old. He got selected also for the Leeward U-17 and U-15 teams. He is still tapped to be playing for the St. Kitts U-19 team. “

Jeremiah Louis is a graduate of the Tucker Clarke Primary School and Washington Archibald High School. He is currently enrolled at the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College.
