BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - RECENT events have led Leader of the Unity Movement the Hon. Dr. Timothy Harris to conclude that Prime Minister Dr. The Hon. Denzil Douglas is “scared” of the momentum the movement has mustered during the past year, more so, in recent weeks.
Dr. Harris spoke with SKNVibes following last week launch of Team Unity’s Campaign Headquarters and expressed his belief that the police’s move to deny the blocking of the upper portion of Fort Street and the granting of permission to accommodate their launch was purely political.
He opined that the sitting government, led by Dr. Douglas, is responsible for the decision to deny the permission and it signals that the Prime Minister is more than concerned with the strides that Team Unity has made.
“He is absolutely scared...and what you saw was the insecurity of the government which led them to overreach. It is that notion that the Titanic cannot sink that led it to sink. Because they figure that they could cripple the people, they cow them into passivity, the reverse was the reaction.”
According to Harris, the plan - which he said was hatched by the leader of the government - backfired and worked in the favour of Team Unity.
“Thousands of people came out and thousands more listened on radio to a successful launch. What otherwise would have been a normal opening became an extraordinary one. And it would have been more orderly, they would have had less need for the police, they would have had less traffic inconvenience if they would have done the right thing...”
During the opening ceremony, which was held last Wednesday (June 25), individuals who appeared to be supporters of the Unity Movement physically blocked the road and diverted traffic to other roadways. Eventually, it appeared as if the police themselves were assisting in the diversion of traffic.
