July 3rd, 2014  --  A crew of the HMS Protector’s servicemen, Rotaractors, Rotarians, and JVD neighbors recently teamed up to renovate the home of an 82 year old resident on Jost Van Dyke.

The elderly resident who lives with moderate mental challenges resides in a very basic wooden home, and is supported by her neighbors, family and friends. However, the condition of the home had deteriorated significantly due to the lack of resources required to properly complete the building several years ago.

A close family member said: “We just couldn’t keep up with the insects and other small animals that kept entering the building in the spaces between the walls and the ceiling.” Her bathroom and kitchen were also in deplorable conditions but the funds were just not available to make the necessary renovations. JVD and Tortola based businesses such as Caribbean Colors, STO Enterprises, New Horizon Ferry Services, Foxy’s and Corsairs Restaurants, along with a team of servicemen from Her Majesty’s Royal Navy, and residents from both islands dug in for four days over the course of the past two weekends remodeling her bathroom and kitchen, replacing all doors and hand rails, repainting the entire house inside and out, and installing new fixtures and plumbing.

“I was extremely pleased with the outpouring of support and encouragement from the JVD community on this,” said Director of Community Service Projects for the Rotary Club of Tortola – Mr. Dion Stoutt. “It was a heartwarming reminder that the Community Spirit in the BVI is still very much alive and well.”

Rotarian Julian Smith commented, “I love these types of service projects where we can see almost immediately how the work Rotary does improves the lives of persons in our communities.”

2014-2015 President of Rotary International, Gary C. K. Huang has challenged Rotary Clubs around the world to Light Up Rotary over the next 12 months. It is inspired by an old Chinese proverb which says, “It is better to light a candle, than to curse the darkness.”

“In line with this year’s theme, the membership of the Rotary Club of Tortola plans to continue our great tradition of service to our community as much as we possibly can this Rotary year. We would also like to express our profound appreciation for the outstanding support we continue to receive from this most generous community,” remarked incoming president Henry Creque.

Rotary unites diverse leaders from all continents, cultures, and occupations to exchange ideas and take action in communities around the world. Rotaract – a youth arm of Rotary is a global community of young adults between ages 18 and 30 taking action for positive change. The Rotary Club of Tortola meets every Thursday at noon at the Mariner’s Inn Restaurant at the Moorings, Tortola.
