BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - PRIME MINISTER the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas has denied claims that he was “campaigning in church” on Sunday (July 6) when he and his Labour Party worshiped at New Birth Gospel Tabernacle. In another breath however, he said “a good politician campaigns at all times”.
It was reported that while making a presentation at the church, the Prime Minister said, “The case is not straight that we going for all eight because church - as we have been taught - unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed.”
While fielding questions from the media during his monthly press conference Wednesday (July 9), Dr. Douglas explained that his statement is a popular one and that it was based on his belief that his St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party would retain the six seats they now have as well as winning the remaining two, which the People’s Action Movement now holds.
“My statement in the church...It’s a statement that is well known. The St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party is committed to ensure that it retains all of its seats it has in Parliament at this time and will go after and also have returned the other seats it does not have, two seats in St. Kitts. ...Didn’t give a political speech, I made reference to the fact that the Labour Party is gonna go after all eight seats. I don’t think that is campaigning in church. In fact, a good politician campaigns at all times.”
Dr. Douglas’ final statement threw some for a loop, but when asked if it were him admitting to politicking in church, he repeated that “a good politician campaigns at all times...I don’t think I admit to anything...”
