Team Unity Condemns The Illegitimate Douglas Administration’s Attack On Human Rights In St. Kitts And Nevis

Press Release

BASSETERRE, St Kitts, July 17th 2014 - TEAM UNITY is concerned about the continued erosion of democracy and the unrelenting attack on people’s fundamental rights by the illegitimate Douglas administration, which continues to occupy public office without constitutional and moral authority.

It is only in this administration that persists in violating the basic principle of democratic governance, can an unelected and unelectable occupant of the office of Minister of Education, Nigel Carty, aided and abetted by the occupant of the office of Minister of Health, Marcella Liburd, continue to show disdain for the education, health and welfare of teachers and students.

The latest salvo has come in the form of a threat to discipline the Principal of the Basseterre High School (BHS), Mrs. Carlene Henry-Morton, who dared to stand up to protect the fundamental rights of the students to an education in a safe and healthy environment and the fundamental rights of the teachers to pursue their profession without compromising their health and welfare.

Lest we forget, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 10 December 1948. It came out of the horrible experience of the Second World War and “represents the first global expression of rights to which all human beings are inherently entitled.” Article 3 (of the UDHR) says, “Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person.” Article 23(1) says, “Everyone has the right to work, to free choice of employment, to just and favourable conditions of work and to protection against unemployment. Article 26(1) says, “Everyone has the right to education.”

According to Team Unity Spokesperson on Education, the Hon. Shawn Richards, “this illegitimate Douglas administration must know that the aforementioned are basic human rights that are not to be taken lightly, exchanged or traded away. They are fundamental rights, guaranteed by our constitution, which define who we are as a people, how we interact and build social capital and how our society functions in a secure, prosperous and sustainable way. Surely, they must know that our students should never have to choose between their education and their health and welfare and they must know that our teachers should never be forced to choose between their work and their health and welfare. It was wrong in the past, it is wrong now and a people-centered Unity government will make absolutely sure that it is put right tomorrow and that never again will anybody in this country be put in such a position.”

Let us keep in mind that an attack on our teachers and students anywhere, whether it be Basseterre or Charlestown, Halfway Tree or Cotton Ground, is an attack on teachers and students everywhere in beloved our Federation. That is not how a government that considers itself a servant of the people behaves and that is not how it should be allowed to conduct the affairs of the people in whom ultimate sovereignty resides.

We call upon the teachers, the students, the parents, the Church, the national community, to join us in condemning this illegitimate Douglas administration’s unrelenting, immoral assault on our youth, education and health, the very pillars on which every prosperous and sustainable society is built.
