BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - AS it now stands, all eyes are on the 2014 Toyota Yaris grand prize! And the 13 calypsonians who have been selected to advance to the semifinal round of the Culturama 40 TDC-sponsored Senior Kaiso Competition are expected to put their best foot forward in their bid to bag the prize and dethrone the reigning king.

Eliminations were held on Sunday (Jul. 20) at Herbert’s Beach where 18 kaisonians performed their renditions before a five-member panel and by the end of the evening, Polo, Slimba, Sweeties, Watusi and Wingie were eliminated.

And advancing to the semifinals are: Black Hat, JoJo, De Enforcer, Pupa Wheeler, Hollywood, Flamingo, Adowah, Nutsy, Astro, Baker, Sabu, Dis ‘N’ Dat and Daddy Nature.

The 13 will engage in yet another round of kaiso battle this Friday (Jul. 25) and it is scheduled to be held at the Cultural Complex at 8:00 p.m.

From that 13 - as explained by Culturama Chairman Antonio ‘Abonati’ Liburd, seven will advance to the final round of the competition where King Bingie would fight to hold on to his crown while warding off his competitors.

But with more than bragging rights up for grabs, the brand new red 2014 Toyota Yaris will be the property of he who can outsing and outperform their competitors.

Liburd told SKNVibes that this is the first time that the Culturama Committee has been able to offer a vehicle to the Kaiso Monarch and he thanked TDC for the part they played in making that a reality.

“We are happy that TDC would have come on board and partner with us to make the vehicle somewhat more affordable to us because it is not a full sponsorship we are getting. It is that they have made the vehicle affordable to us so that we can purchase it as the main prize for the senior calypso monarch this year...”

The First Runner-Up would win himself $10 000 while the Second Runner-Up will win an $8 000-prize.

The final leg of the competition is scheduled for August 3.
