BASSETERRE St. Kitts, July 23rd, 2014   --   The annual Oasis Summer Camp got off to a flying start last week Monday July 14 and is expected to climax this week and next week. The Camp, organized by the Oasis Language, Arts and Educational Foundation is now in its third year and will run until August 1st at the St. Peters Community Center.

Oasis Summer Camp, which is usually geared towards children having a fun learning summer; has joined hands this year with the Dr. William Connor Primary School, in order to raise funds for both institutions; hence the name, “HAND IN HAND WE GROW.”

The highlight for the first week of the camp featured a session on drumming with drummer Royd Phipps. The children enjoyed an intense session of drumming by Mr. Phipps and actively participated in the activity. On Thursday last week, they visited the SNAPPER Fish Farm in Conaree where farm owner Dr. Barrington Brown taught and demonstrated the operations of the facility.

The SNAPPER Fish Farm is a project where fresh water fish are raised in salt water pumped from the Atlantic Ocean. The camp starts each day with devotion and includes circle time, activities designed to help the children socialize. During the camp, arts, craft and Spanish classes are taught by instructor Josémaria

Bertie and Ms. Elliott, along with the help of Shanelia Frances and Keisha Evelyn; directed by Kim Huie.

For this week into next week, the camp continues with several activities, which includes visits from Senior Magistrate Josephine Mallalieu, who will speak to the children on how to keep out of trouble and the consequences of crime; Officer Lauston Percival from Operation Future; and dentist Dr. Trevor Christmas will speak to the children about proper care of their teeth. In the third week, the children will be going on an island tour as well as a picnic to Brimstone Hill and much more fun stuff. They will also have a chance to check on the seeds they would have planted during the camp.

Registration is still open as well as we are inviting interesting persons to volunteer. Participants are from ages 6 to 10, lunch is provided but parents are encouraged to provide healthy snacks for their children. Transportation is also provided. Pick ups are at 8:15am at the Pelican Mall and drop offs at 4:30pm. For more information or to register, call Kim Huie at 760-2751. The Oasis Foundation would like to thank VDS Distribution for donating bathroom dispensers and liquid soap used at the camp.
