BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE Fire and Rescue Services on St. Kitts has kicked off another Summer Safety Programme with approximately 130 children from around the island with aim of giving them a better understanding of fire, water and traffic safety practices.

In its 12th year of existence, the programme is also geared towards the reduction of incidences of traffic accidents and house fires involving children.

The programme is being conducted simultaneously in Basseterre, Sandy Point and Tabernacle and only last week, the Nevis leg of the programme was held.

Speaking at the official opening of the St. Kitts leg of the programme, held at the Basseterre Fire Station Fire Service compound yesterday (Jul. 23), Fire Officer Davron Clark said the programme will give the children tools of prevention.

“Our aim is to ensure that all children at primary age level are equipped with prevention tools that will enable them to be better informed and safe during vulnerable times of school summer vacation.”

After welcoming the participants to the programme, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Homeland Security, Her Excellency Astona Browne outlined the importance of the programme.

“Those of you who come from year to year know how important it is. Those children who would have moved on to adulthood would have taken with them all that they have learnt over the years.”

She encouraged the participants to be attentive during the sessions.

“While you are here I would encourage you to ensure that you listen and pay close attention to what is being taught. You would be involved in several activities and you will be having fun but pay close attention to the lessons being taught and the messages that are being sent.”

During the three-day programme, the children will be exposed to theoretical and practical examples of traffic, water and fire safety responses and at the conclusion, each would receive a certificate declaring their successful completion of the programme.

Additionally, two of the children from each of the three districts would be selected to be the Junior Fire Chief and the Junior Deputy Fire Chief on the last day of the programme.
