BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – MERCIA FLANDERS, aunt of the 11-year-old girl who needed surgery to remove a tumour which was growing on her face, is extending appreciation and offering thanks to those who contributed to the success of the surgery.
Just about two months after the public was made aware of Vernel Thomas’ situation, and after contributions had been made towards sending her overseas to receive the operation, she left the Federation on June 17 for Antigua where the surgery was performed two days later by a Dr. Roberts.
Flanders told SKNVibes that after about two hours of surgery, the benign tumour was successfully removed and Thomas began her recovery process.
She has since returned to the Federation (June 30) and Flanders – her guardian – explained that it is necessary to Vernel to undergo periodic check-ups to ensure her recover process progresses smoothly.
Vernel’s situation began in November 2013 when Flanders recognised a bump on the left side of her face, which grew over time. A number of visits to medical practitioners and surgeries ensued before it was revealed that a tumour was growing on her face.
A bank account was established into which individuals, businesses and organisations were free to deposit their monetary contributions towards Vernel’s cause. And with the success of the surgery, Flanders says she is grateful to those who spared not in assisting her and her niece.
She informed that most of the monies spent while in Antigua was contributed through the account.
“I personally want to thank God for the strength he has given to me…I never thought I could have done it but I did. Thank You Lord for my supportive family members who were with us all the way… I would like to thank again, persons who have contributed towards the surgery, ticket costs and accommodation…
“I mostly want to thank the Tyrell Williams Primary School, the Principal and the teachers who checked on us constantly to ensure that things were being put in place for Vernel… Thanks to Dr. Jacobs, Dr. Martin, Dr. Jones for the work they contributed… Thanks God I had to patience to cope and adhere to everything.
“A heartfelt thanks to everybody who continue to give and God bless you.”
