BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - TWO of the Federation’s umpires are set to stand during games of the St. Kitts leg of the Limacol Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

Wycliffe Mitchum of St. Kitts and former West Indies Batsman Carl Tuckett of Nevis will get the opportunity to ply their trades during some of the game including the Finals and Semi-Finals of the ‘Biggest party in sports’.

In an interview with this publication, Senior Sports Officer in the Ministry of Sports Vernon Springer, gave some background into the umpires’ careers.

“Wycliffe Mitchum is the Treasurer of the St. Kitts Umpires Association. He is also the Vice President of the Leeward Island Umpires Association. He first qualified as an umpire in 1991 and his first game was in the Leeward Island’s Tournament.

“His first, First Class game was in 2000 – England A versus Leeward Islands. He participated in 68 Leeward Island Tournament matches and 26 First Class Matches including One Day matches and was fourth umpire in one international match - West Indies versus India. He was also the standby umpire for the ICC Women’s World Cup in 2010.”

“Carl Tuckett has played One Day Internationals for the West Indies vs England in 1998. He did his umpire exams in 2004. He has been involved in U17 tournaments, Women Tournaments and CPL in Antigua last year.”

Springer also outlined how the arrangement came about with the CPL.

“Both Tuckett and Mitchum are both first class umpires and the Government made recommendations for Tuckett and Mitchum and their credentials in West Indies First Class Cricket and high marks were given to these two individuals.

“We think this is an important chapter in leaving a legacy of the CPL by having these two umpires participate here in St. Kitts and Nevis.”

The St. Kitts leg of the 2014 Limacol Caribbean Premier League will bowl off on August 7 and run to August 16 with nine matches being hosted at Warner Park.
