Basseterre, St Kitts, July 24, 2014  --  The St Kitts Teachers’ Union provided yet another opportunity for teachers to expand their practices through focused interaction with other teachers and through accessing resources with individual support and to overcome traditional ways teachers have interacted. The Union convened its 2014 Project Overseas In-Service for Special Education & Differentiation of Instruction Summer Insitute over the period July 14-23, 2014.

The training programme, which was conducted at the Advanced Vocational Education Centre (AVEC), involved six (6) hours of training per day, for eight days. In addition to formal teaching sessions, participants were given an opportunity to carry out discussions in small groups on the topics covered during the day. The workshop was attended by teachers from the Early Childhood Unit, Primary Schools, High Schools, Post Secondary Schools, from both St Kitts and Nevis. The training sessions were conducted by four Canadian tutors namely Ms Patricia Munroe – Team Leader, Ms Tammy Gallant, Ms Joanne Lemieux, and Ms Susan Sembaj.

The structured program consisted of eight (8) modules namely: ‘Learning Disabilities, Autism & Aspergers, Intellectual Delays, Deaf & Hard of Hearing, Learning Styles & Integration, Mathematics, Special Education Strategies and Literacy. The training sessions aimed at strengthening teachers ability to better monitor, and identify students’ individual needs and to appropriately and effectively respond to them.

The closing ceremony recognised the immense contribution of the Canadian Teachers Federation in funding and facilitating the training.

Certificates of Participation were also awarded to the workshop participants by each of the four tutors of the Canadian Teachers Federation team. Co-Tutors for this year’s programme were Ms Andrea Henry of the Washington Archibald High School, Mrs Soretta Browne - Saddlers Primary School, Mrs Sandra McKoy-Cotton Thomas, Ms Violet Gordon - Cayon High School, Mrs Leeshaw Huctchinson - Bronte Welsh, and Mrs Gillian Blake- Charles E Mills Seconday School. The Summer Institute was managed and coordinated by Course Director Mrs Lavern Dublin-Collins of AVEC

During the closing ceremony, the local participants spoke of their progress in learning a variety of pedagogical approaches that will be implemented and shared on their return to their schools and classrooms. The Canadian tutors were incredibly overwhelmed at the efforts and generosity the teachers union showed in accommodating them. The ceremony also featured cultural presentations from both Canadians and local participants.

Union President, Bishop Ron Dublin-Collins congratulated the organising committee on its success and expressed his heartfelt gratitude for the exemplary support to the success of the Summer programme by the Canadian Teachers Union, Co-Tutors, Premier Vance Amory of the Nevis Island Administration, Mr Clyde Christopher Director of AVEC and Mrs Lavern Dublin-Collins, Course Director.
