Dr Harris “The Country And Our People Would Have Been Better Off Under Team Unity”

By: Team UNITY, Press Release (TUCOM)

BASSETERRE St. Kitts, August 14th, 2014  --  The failure to debate the Motion Of  No Confidence or call fresh elections is a travesty. The consequence of this is that “the country and our people have lost out on the implementation of the Prosperity Agenda by Team Unity.”

In a radio interview with Mr. Michael Powell, host of Changing Times, a popular morning programme aired on Sugar City Radio (90.3FM), Dr Harris said that “if the norms and conventions of the Westminster democracy were being followed, Team Unity would have been in government and the people would have benefitedtremendously.”

Outlining some of the areas in which people would have benefited, the Team Unity Leader said that “relief would have come to the people of St Kitts and Nevis who are now experiencing hard life, who are up to their eyes in debt and unable to cope with the financial distress.

Immediately one would have removed the oppressive 17 percent Vat from food, medicine, educational supplies and funeral expenses, so that the poor would have money to take care of their basic needs. We would have by now reduced electricity charges significantly, we would have reduced mortgageson homes and student loans. VAT has been too pervasive and has been strangling our people and many businesses.”

Dr Harris who served as the country’s Minister of Finance was responsible for turning around the country’s fortune in 2008 and 2009 when for first time in the country’s history, St Kitts and Nevis recorded its first surplus of over $130million and $140million respectively compared to annual deficits accumulated by Douglaswho served as Finance Minister over the period 1995-2007.

Over the said period of Douglas stewardship an accumulated deficit of over $700 million was reported. The bloated deficit spending by Douglas has bankrupt the country forcing it by2011 into a Stand By Arrangement with the IMF for over $225million.

In the two hour interview on August 11th 2014 (20th months since the filing of the Motion of No Confidence), Dr Harris said the country must sanction the Douglas regime for making St Kitts and Nevis a pariah in the practice of democracy and for causing so much pain in our country. One in every 3 person in St Kitts cannot afford to buy basic items for their survival. Our poverty rate is 33 percent.
