Unity: Parliament should not convene without tabling MoNC

Some Members of Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – WHILE they have not outlined a specific course of action to be taken during today’s (Aug. 18) sitting of the Federal Parliament, Team Unity says it does not condone any sitting of the legislative body unless it is to table and debate the pending Motion of No Confidence.

During a press conference held at the Unity Command Centre late last week, Leader of the Movement, The Hon. Dr. Timothy Harris indicated that the team is still “finalising” its plan regarding Parliament but reminded that since the filing of the Motion of No Confidence in December 2012, the Opposition Parliamentarians have used every available opportunity to raise the issue of its tabling and debate.

“…but the history of our engagement in Parliament would show that on every occasion where we had an opportunity, we raised this matter of the non-tabling and debate of the Motion of No Confidence in Parliament and the last time we entered Parliament, we did infact do exactly what you asked. So we have not been silent in relation to that in the hallowed chambers of the Parliament”

Dr. Harris said the Team has no problem with Parliament convening but issue is taken with – as he describes – the government’s efforts to delay the tabling of the MoNC.

“We would wish the Parliament were to meet every day if there was business to conduct. We have no problem, but the Parliament must do the proper thing and what is proper is for the Parliament to accord the priority which it must in relation to the two motions of (no) confidence now before it.

“And that is why I went to Justice Ramdhani’s judgment. He said explicitly that it makes a mockery and it is this mockery we are objecting to. We are objecting now - as we did last week and as we have been doing for the last 20 months - to the Douglas regime and the Speaker making a mockery, a sham of Parliament. Because this is an Executive according to Justice Ramdhani, not according to me.”

Dr. Harris indicated that Team Unity also does not condone the “abnormal” operation of the Parliament.

“We have no problem with parliament. In fact we are elements of Parliament elected by our people. We have the majority of the parliament here. When you do the maths and you look over and you see five people, five shaky people and six people solidly anchored in the support of the country and five proposing and six opposing. That is not how normal parliament works and that is what we are taking an objection to. And we want the country to take the strongest possible objection to it. It must not happen!”
