Woman finds scorpion in home

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE last thing she expected to find in the sanctity of her home was a scorpion. But a Cayon resident has recounted the unnerving experience and the concern she has, especially since her home is also occupied by children.

The women – who spoke to SKNVibes on condition of anonymity – explained that on Sunday evening (Aug. 17), she had finished folding some freshly-washed clothes that she removed from the outside, when she spotted the creature on the floor.

She said she was not sure what it was but a closer look confirmed that it was a scorpion. And while most would have avoided the arthropod at all cost, the Cayon woman managed to catch the critter in a plastic bottle in which holes were made for ventilation.

The scorpion measures little more than an inch in length.

She said she was scared when she made the discovery and the fact that she has children heightened her concern about the find.

The young woman explained to SKNVibes that her concerns also stem from scorpions’ venomous, crippling, debilitating and even fatal stings, for which they are known.

This publication spoke with a representative of the Agriculture Department who explained that scorpions in St. Kitts is not a novelty and for years there have been sporadic sightings.

He also explained that they are not “an invasive species”.

SKNVibes understands that the arthropod was collected from the Cayon woman yesterday by an individual attached to the Agriculture Department.

And Chief Environmental Health Officer Alex Riley informed this publication that he was told of the find and although he did not get a chance to do so at the time of the interview, he is going to “look into it”.

This publication understands that scorpions have also been sighted in Ottley’s, Godwin Ghaut and Lower Cayon – among others areas.
