Tropical wave brings rain to islands

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A tropical wave has already begun to dump rains on St. Kitts and Nevis and with rainfall expected to continue throughout this evening (Aug. 21), residents and visitors are being advised to avoid watercourses during the period of rainfall.

A weather forecast issued by the St. Kitts Meteorologist Office today explained that “a tropical wave associated with an elongated area of low pressure located east of the Windward Islands is being monitored for possible further development over the next few days as the system moves across the eastern Caribbean islands.”

It also indicated that skies over the islands are partly cloudy “becoming increasingly cloudy with showers, some of which could be moderate to heavy at times”.

St. Kitts and Nevis is among the islands which are expected to experience gusty winds and heavy rainfall during this evening.

National Disaster Coordinator Carl Herbert – speaking with SKNVibes – advised motorists and other road users to avoid parking their vehicles or travelling along popular watercourses which include College Street Ghaut and Westbourne Ghaut, at least until rainfall would have stopped completely.

He reminded that the system is a tropical wave and not a tropical storm and because there is “no forecasted rainfall quantity”, any amount of rain could be deposited on the islands.

Therefore, he explained, it is important that in addition to the avoidance of watercourses, individuals should continue to monitor local media sources as the system progresses and as the 2014 Hurricane Season continues.
