Press Release

August 25, 2014  --  Prime Minister Gaston Browne left Antigua on Saturday afternoon, August 23rd 2014, bound for the People’s Republic of China. He was accompanied by seven government officials, all guests of the Government of the People’s Republic of China. The delegation will arrive in China on Monday afternoon, where a very busy 5-day itinerary has already been planned. This is the very first official visit to China that the new Prime Minister has made, following the change of administration on June 12, 2014.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne is scheduled to hold talks with the Premier of China, His Excellency Li Kequiang, on Tuesday afternoon, August 26 2014, preceded by review of a Guard of Honour. The two heads will discuss several weighty matters, including exploring ways to strengthen the relations between the two states. China is the world’s most populous state, and geographically one of the largest; Antigua and Barbuda is one of the smallest, in population and size.

The two heads will also be discussing reform of the United Nations, the challenges of global climate change, global terrorism and other interests that impact on the global community. A banquet will follow, as will the exchange of gifts and taking of official photos.

On Wednesday, August 27th 2014, the Prime Minister will meet with the President of China, His Excellency Xi Jinping, for discussions on more parochial issues, including the continuation of the One-China policy, the development challenges faced by both states, the China scholarship program, the provision of emergency supplies, the funded projects in Antigua, including the new school at Five Islands. The Prime Minister has already indicated that he intends to expand the project, possibly turning the intended secondary school site into the beginnings of the University College of Antigua and Barbuda.

On Thursday, August 28th 2014, the delegation will be flown to Nanjing where the International Youth Olympics will be coming to an end. Eight other Heads of State will be present in Nanjing to witness the closing ceremony of the Youth Olympics. The very next day, Friday August 29th 2014, the delegation will fly to Shandong Province to meet with groups of investors and the local governors of several Provinces. Those meetings will continue on Saturday, August 30, 2014. On Sunday, 31st August 2014, the delegation will fly back to Beijing and then on to New York. The flight lasts more than fourteen hours.

In New York, Prime Minister Browne will meet with several investors, nationals of Antigua and Barbuda, and staff members of the Antigua and Barbuda U.N. Mission. “This will be a very important trip that will cement the relations between our two states, and allow me to enhance the standing of our country,” Prime Minister Browne concluded.

Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Public Safety, Immigration and Labour the Hon. Steadroy Benjamin is the Acting Prime Minister during the absence from the State of Prime Minister Browne.
