BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – RAIN had the final say last night (Aug. 27) at Warner Park, causing the one-off Twenty20 between West Indies and Bangladesh to be abandoned with only 4.4 overs being bowled.
Less than 20 minutes into the match, a heavy downpour came which forced a delay of play. During that delay the grounds staff struggled to get the covers onto the pitch because of strong winds, which led to it getting drenched. This proved critical to the final outcome of the game.
After the rain had eased the ground staff also faced the problems of getting the covers off the field as the lights in the facility were consistently shutting off, forcing the grounds staff to work in darkness in their attempts to get the field back up to a proper standard for play.
However the drenched pitch plus a consistent loss of electricity were taken into consideration when the umpires made the difficult decision to abandon the game more than two hours after the initial downpour of rain.
Throughout the delay however, the fairly good-sized crowd at Warner Park stood firm during the heavy rains and the loss of illumination with the hope that the teams would once again take to the field
.
They were however entertained by the DJ in the Party Stand who continued despite the conditions.
Prior to the downpour however, Bangladesh got to 31-0 off the 4.4 overs. The series will now move to St. Vincent were both teams will play in the first of two test matches not before the Bangladeshi’s taking part in a three-day warm up match versus the St. Kitts-Nevis team from August 30 to September 1 at Warner Park.
