BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - TEAM Unity Leader the Hon. Dr. Timothy Harris is accusing the government of “spending like a drunken sailorman” to secure votes during the upcoming General Elections.

The former Government Minister claimed that in the past year and a half, the government has been spending uncontrollably with an aim to buy votes.

“The government is spending - in the last 20 months - like a drunken sailorman in an effort to buy the votes of the people of the country whom it has brutalize by excessive taxation including a high electricity tariff which increased by 85 percent, unprecedented in the history of the country and the Caribbean.

“The very people that is brutalized with a VAT of 17 percent on food and medicine…the government is now attempting to buy their votes through irresponsible spending and giveaways and we have taken objection to that.”

He was also critical of the government’s lack of transparency and accountability when it comes to the controlling of the country’s affairs.

“We also take objection to the fact that there is no transparency and accountability by this government so even when he comes to Parliament, it attempts to deceive Parliament as to the true nature of the affairs of the country.  On one hand, it has all that money available to it and on the other hand, it comes borrowing, requesting permission to borrow.

“If you have all the excess cash there is no need to burden the young people, no need to burden the future generation with having to pay loans and interest costs when the government could have used our own money in the SIDF to settle indebtedness, including paying down the treasury bills.”

Harris was also of the view that the Government’s main focus should be ensuring that elections are free and fair.

“It is time for the government to ensure elections are free and fair and call the elections so that people can choose hope instead of despair, choose transparency and accountability or squandermania and disrespect for the constitution and the people of the land.”
