BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE ceremonial parade for this year’s independence celebration is expected to take on a different and unusual form as the event, which is normally held on the morning of Independence Day, will be staged on the night of the eve of Independence.

According to the schedule of events that was circulated to the public, the parade will begin at 10:00 p.m. at Warner Park on September 18, to culminate during the early morning hours of the following day with the Prime Minister’s toast to the nation and Independence address following.

Speaking in a recent interview with ZIZ, head of the Independence Celebration Committee Her Excellency Astona Browne gave details surrounding the event.

“The ceremonial parade with the armed and unarmed forces will be held on the evening of September 18, culminating on the early hours of Independence Day with the toast at Camp Springfield with the Governor General and the Hon. Prime Minister. The Prime Minister of course will use that occasion and address the Nation and the fanfare of the fireworks of course will bring down the curtain for the special event.”

The Independence Day – she further informed - will be dedicated to women in sports and a cricket match between the West Indies Women and New Zealand Women teams would be held.

“On Friday, September 19 the West Indies team will be playing right here in Warner Park on Independence Day. That is a special event; we want to use that opportunity to big up the women folk on this occasion of our independence.”

Some other events that are planned for the independence celebrations include: National Colours Day on September 5, Ministers’ Visits to Schools and Taiwanese Cultural Group Presentation on September 9, the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Drum Corp Presentation and-Gala Night of Independence on September 12, National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving/State Service on September 14 and The National Honors Announcement, Community Flag Raising Ceremonies and Laying of Wreath & Guard of Honour at RLB Community Park in St. Pauls on September 16.
