Fleming’s comments on crime dismissed as nonsense by Harris, Hamilton

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – MEMBERS of the People’s Action Movement (PAM) and the People’s Labour Party (PLP) have discarded as “nonsense” statements made recently by Deputy Leader of the National Integrity Party (NIP) Roy Fleming concerning the renewal of the contract of the Commissioner of Police and the state of crime in the Federation.

Last week Fleming – former member of the PAM – took to the radio and via FreedomFM, and said a high crime rate is in the best interest of opposition parties and suggested that the PAM and PLP “prefer to see the departure of the Commissioner and as a possible consequence, a corresponding increase in criminal activity. That is what they want to see”.

He further indicated that the issue of crime is always used as a political football “particularly by those parties in opposition…

“So it is not surprising to us in the National Integrity Party that the People’s Action Movement and the People’s Labour Party do not support the extension or renewal of the Commissioner’s contract. This position by PAM and the People’s Labour Party is now being interpreted by the people of this county as a lack of interest in their safety and well-being by those politicians who have vowed to attain political power at all costs, even if our people are being shot down in the streets like dogs.”

NIP’s Deputy Leader suggested however that both the PAM and PLP should follow that party’s lead “to function in a responsible manner and lend support to all and everything which benefits every man, woman and child in our Federation”.

Deputy Political Leader of the PAM, Eugene Hamilton – when approached by this publication about Fleming’s comments – described them as “foolishness” and indicated that he would not comment on such.

PLP Leader the Hon. Dr. Timothy Harris also dismissed Fleming’s comments as “nonsense”.

“The silliness of the statement is self-evident and therefore I would not waste time in responding to that kind of nonsense.”
