BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - EVERY household in St. Kitts and Nevis is expected to be equipped with LED light bulbs as part of the government’s initiative to reduce the cost of electricity in the Federation.

Giving an address last week, Federal Minister of Energy Hon. Dr. Earl Asim Martin disclosed that in two weeks his Ministry is expected to begin the process.

“I would like to say to the people who are gathered this afternoon through an initiative by the Ministry of Energy and SIDF… in the next two weeks we expect to replace all of the household bulbs in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis with LED bulbs.

“Whether you are using incandescent bulbs or the energy saver bulbs we expect in the next two weeks… to start a programme to replace all the household bulbs with LED bulbs. That will reduce the cost of electricity for every household in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis.”

Dr. Martin was also ecstatic that the Federation was one of the leaders in this sphere of electricity cost.

“I think this is a tremendous effort. There is hardly any country within the OECS or in the region that has moved forward in that direction. That will help in the overall reduction in the cost of electricity in the households in St. Kitts and Nevis.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank SIDF for financing the overall project in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy and SpeedTech who is producing the bulbs.”

According to Energystar, LEDs or light–emitting diodes, are semi-conductor devices that produce visible light when an electrical current is passed through them.
