V.I. School of Technical Studies opens it doors with 40 Students

    Thursday, September 11, 2014 – The Virgin Islands School of Technical Studies in Baugher’s Bay opened its doors this morning to approximately 40 students at the orientation session for the 2014 – 2015 academic school year.

     

    The broad programmes being offered this year at the school are cosmetology, auto-mechanics, culinary arts and construction.

    Acting Chief Education Officer Mrs. Jillian Douglas-Phillip in an interview with the Department of Information and Public Relations said, “These students will have the opportunity to receive certification not only in Department of Education issued School Leaving Examinations, but also in the Internationally recognized City and Guilds Technical, Vocational Certification and the CXC Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) and the Caribbean Vocational Qualifications (CVQ)”.

    The Chief Education Officer went on to state that if the students are successful at these programmes, they will mark the first cohort of students under this new technical school, the Virgin Islands School of Technical Studies - Class of 2017.

    At this morning’s opening, Acting Principal, Germaine Scatliffe, Deputy Principal Mr. Clifton Forbes and Guidance Officer Ms. Geraldine Noel addressed the students and welcomed them to the new institution.

    They were assigned homeroom teachers, introduced to their teachers and peers and received class schedules and booklists. Classes will begin on Monday, September 15.

    Presently, plans are underway to host a naming ceremony for the new wing of the Technical School.

    The Ministry of Education and Culture stands committed to developing needed competencies in technical and vocational education to cater to the demand for specialized labour in the Virgin Islands.
