Thursday, September 11, 2014 – Government continues to implement measures which are aimed at improving the well-being, health and academic achievement of the Territory’s school children.

This was manifested earlier when Minister for Health and Social Development, Honourable Ronnie Skelton and Minister for Education and Culture, Honourable Myron Walwyn signed a memorandum of understanding to improve the health, well-being of school children here.

Minister Skelton said the move to sign the MoU was strategic in an effort to promote health for all residents across the life cycle. “We must not lose sight of the fact that many of the values, habits and practices we exhibit as adults span many generations and have been ingrained in us from childhood,” Honourable Skelton said, as he re-iterated the importance of early intervention.

The MoU outlines strategies that will be undertaken by the Ministry of Education and Culture with technical support from the Ministry of Health and Social Development to establish a healthy and safe social environment at school for students and staff.

Honourable Skelton added that through this collaboration it is anticipated that knowledge and understanding of health is expanded and an increase in the overall health and productivity of the Virgin Islands population is achieved.

“I also want to thank my colleague Minister for Education and Culture and his team for their commitment to this worthy endeavour as we work together to give our children the best start in live,” Minister Skelton concluded.

The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding is another initiative of the Ministry of Health and Social Development to promote a comprehensive, integrated approach to improving the health of the population and to reduce chronic non-communicable diseases.
