BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – WITH the Federation of St. Christopher and Nevis set to celebrate its 31st anniversary of independence in a matter of days, the Governor General - Sir Edmund Lawrence - has called on the citizens to protect and defend the beloved nation.

The call came recently while the Governor General was delivering a statement to mark the 31st celebration.

"It is therefore the patriotic duty for all of us to promote, protect and defend our nation of St. Kitts and Nevis as part of our total purpose. You can depend on me to build up and not to break down the nation of St. Kitts and Nevis. Can I depend on you to do the same?"

The Head of State added that it is also the civic duty of nationals to teach the deep meanings of the national symbols which give awareness to nationhood.

"These symbols gives us an awareness of nationhood, love of our native land and mutual kindness and respect of fellow citizens of St. Kitts and Nevis.

“We must take up the civic duty to learn and to teach the youth the symbolic as well as the deep meaning of these symbols, starting in the homes and continuing in the churches, schools and governmental and non-governmental organisations from generation to generation."

Lawrence also stated that the Federation has grown with each year of celebration.

"Each successive anniversary signifies that the Federation is growing up. Let us give joyful thanks and humble praise to God for the countless rich blessings."
