Dr. Timothy Harris gives talk at Washington Adventist University

Press Release (TUCOM)

Basseterre, St.Kitts (TUCOM):- Team UNITY’s Leader Dr the Hon Timothy Harris had the honour of speaking to students at Washington Adventist University on Thursday last while on a North American Tour, in Washington.

Dr Harris said his tour allowed him to meet with a wide cross section of nationals from St Kitts and Nevis to discuss matters of concern relating to the current development of our country and it’s future development under a  Team Unity government.  The Team UNITY Leader took advantage of the opportunity to develop contacts with a variety of institutions and potential investors.

“I am indebted to Professor William Ellis PhD; Professor of Political Studies for the opportunity to interact with students in one of his classes on matters relating to international diplomacy, with particular emphasis on the functioning of Small Island states in international diplomacy. I met a brilliant student from Nevis Ms Janelle Walwyn and I expect her to do very well.”

Dr Harris served with distinction as a Minister of Education and previously lectured in accounting at the University of the West Indies.  Dr Harris has a strong passion for education and has launched scholarship programme in his constituency. Over 200 students have received financial and other awards under this programme."The best social program is a good paying job.  A good paying job is a great step toward prosperity.

Education, training and opportunities are keys to a good paying job.  Team UNITY is focused one hundred percent on the prosperity of the people of St. Kitts and Nevis. This is why we believe that giving our children a head start in preschool  is a good investment in the future of Island".

Team Unity understands intends to proactively pursue opportunities for scholarships, partnerships and awards for students of St. Kitts and Nevis in North America.  Recently team Unity announced plans to reduce payments for university graduates.  Dr Harris said team Unity was conscious that too many university graduates are experiencing financial hardship and repaying the cost of loan financing was a major burden for young graduates.  Many of these return home to find no jobs because the private sector is not expanding. Dr. Harris said "My trip to North America including meeting with individuals  who could potentially help our Island ensure that jobs are available  for Kittitians and Nevisians".

Many of our graduates can find minimum paying jobs under the pre-election programme called PEP. This has been a major demotivator for our young graduates who expected that their university education would have provided better opportunities for them. "We need that intellectual capital here in St. Kitts and Nevis.  I want those students abroad to know that Team Unity will create real opportunities for our people to achieve and prosper
