Cayon High School opens Independence exhibition

By: Loshaun Dixon, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE Library and Resource Centre of the Cayon High School has put on an Independence Display at the school, highlighting some of the past stalwarts of St. Kitts and Nevis as well as showcasing the student’s creative talent.

The exhibition displays a number of arts and crafts pieces made from the national colours by the students and teachers of the school.

Speaking with SKNVibes, school librarian Violent Gordon explained why and how this project came about.

“What we are having is an independence display. We thought as the teachers of the Cayon High, that even though the teachers are saying 31 years of independence, they really should have the meaning and the essence of what happened 31 years ago until now. We were looking at giving them the information in a way where it could be interesting.”

She gave an overview of some of the items on display.

“On display are things such as art; students who created earrings and car dice. There was some art before in a class that we used because we thought they were nice. We have paintings and drawings… From the English Department the students did drawings. We have a past student from last year who has a clothing line and did something.

“The essence of it is to get the students involved and give them a deeper feeling of independence.”

She added that the display will be opened for the whole of this week and urged members of the community to visit the exhibition and support the school.

This publication also spoke with two student of the school - Tyan Williams and T'quansia Berridge - and questioned them on what they thought of the display.

Williams stated that, “It is very beautiful, colourful, it very creative, well organised and I like the fact that everything was made from people of the school.”

She also invited the general public to come out and view the display.

“I would like to invite people from St. Kitts and others from the schools and view how creative people of the school are and to come and buy what our creative students have made.”

Berridge also enjoyed the exhibition and invited the public to view what the school has on display.

“According to what I saw and read, it tells more about our hero's... To me it is very beautiful…

“I will like people to come out and support us and have a view of what we have. Come on out and support us.”
