BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - PRIME MINISTER of St. Kitts and Nevis the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas issued a call today - National Heroes Day (Sept. 16) - for the younger generation to have a greater appreciation for the contributions of the Federation’s National Heroes while urging the older generation not to forget what life was like before their work.

Dr. Douglas was at the time speaking at the 2014 Wreath Laying and Guard of Honour Ceremony at the Robert L Bradshaw Park in St Pauls where the Federation’s National Heroes were in the spotlight.

“It is my belief knowing what life was like then and contrasting it to what life is like now will fill their souls with a greater sense of appreciation for the lives they are now able to live and will be a powerful reminder to them that with perseverance, dedication and sacrifice, that a truly positive outcome is possible.

“…Only then will our young people begin to understand, only then they will really understand why the lives of Bradshaw, Southwell, France and Daniel really mattered.”

He added that the contrast of life then and now is testament to the strength of the human spirit.

“There can be no journey without distance and we here in St. Kitts and Nevis have covered a great distance. The clear and dramatic contrast between there and here…are a powerful testimony to the power of the human spirit.”

The Prime Minister also compared the plight of the Federation’s National Heroes with that of Indian independence leader, Mahatma Gandhi.

“The same time our national heroes Bradshaw, Southwell, France and Daniel were struggling against great odds… Mahatma Gandhi was waging in an identical battle half a world away. As he observed the world around him he spoke out against the seven deadly sins that were the cause of so much suffering in the world.”

Before the Prime Minister’s address however, the Governor General - His Excellency Sir Edmund Lawrence - inspected the Guard of Honour before wreaths were laid afoot of the statue of the Federation’s first National Hero, the Right Excellent Sir Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw.
