Press Release

Saddlers, St. Kitts – As the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis marks its 31st year of independence, the Rotary Club of Liamuiga joined the nation by celebrating a key group of constituents, the elderly, on National Heroes Day. National Heroes Day is celebrated September 16 in the Federation.

Members of the Rotary Club of Liamuiga visited the Saddlers Home for the Elderly on Sept. 16, spending hours with the individuals, talking and recapturing important historical information. It was part of the RCL’s annual Heroes Day Luncheon.

“As an organization, we are dedicated to our community. We have donated items and money but we believe that nothing validates a person better than giving time and being in fellowship and that is what we share as Rotarians and with the elderly residents of the Saddlers community every year on National Heroes Day,” said President of the Rotary Club of Liamuiga, Dr Marcus L Natta.

Individuals were presented with sumptuous dishes, prepared and served by Rotarians. Residents and Rotarians enjoyed the leisure of engaging in laughs and stories of the “good old days.” Along with the lunch, the seniors were treated to melodious steel pan music by gifted pianist Craig McDowell.

In addition, several medical students from the University of the Medical Health Sciences, invited by the Rotarians, performed blood pressures checks and other medical diagnostics for the seniors.

In a brief ceremony, President Natta handed over items for the home, including 10 pillows, a standing fan and a wall clock. The items were accepted by Mrs Francine Pollock, Social Assistance Officer for Zone 4. Mrs Pollock expressed sincere gratitude to the RCL for the timely donations and encouraged the Rotarians to continue this annual project for the Saddlers community.

Also in attendance were the Honourable Marcella Liburd, Minister of Health, Social and Community Development, Culture and Gender Affairs and Ms Sharon Rattan, Permanent Secretary of the said Ministry. Both lauded the Club’s work and efforts in recognizing and showing appreciation of the elderly.
