Is Government Trying to Frustrate PAM Central Basseterre Whistle Stop & Rally?

Press Release
September 19th, 2014 - On Monday 8th September, 2014, the Central Basseterre Group of the People’s Action Movement, (PAM), and its candidate, Jonel Powell, who is also a member of the joint opposition group, Team Unity, wrote to the police regarding a planned Whistle Stop and Rally.

The Whistle Stop has been scheduled for this Saturday, 20th September, starting at 3:00pm from Boone Avenue, next to Patsy Allers Playing Field, and ending at the Garden’s with a Rally and jam session with the Nu Vybz Band.

In a letter dated Monday 15th September, 2014, the Police Commissioner gave his blessings to the planned events and stated, “Please be advised that permission has been granted to you and the People’s Action Movement Central Basseterre Campaign Team to hold a Whistle Stop and Rally on Saturday 20th September, 2014, between 2:00pm to 6:00pm…” The Commissioner went on to outline the route that had also been approved for the movement of the Whistle Stop throughout the constituency.

He also indicated that police escort will be provided to assist with the flow of traffic and added that permission was also granted for the use of loud speakers to play music during the
‘mini-motorcade’ within the various districts of Central Basseterre, such as McKnight, Pine Gardens, Market Street, Shadwell Housing, Wades Garden, Irishtown, etc.

It was also made clear by the Commissioner that “Approval has been granted for you to have a Rally at the Garden’s Basketball Court and the use of a Public Address System or noisy instrument at the Rally…”

However, despite receiving the permission of the Police Commissioner, who factored various matters in his decision-making, including public safety, it is now being discovered that someone from the Ministry/Department of Sport has called to advised that they will not grant permission for the use of the Garden’s Basketball Court. No explanation was provided. The Garden’s Playing Field is under the control of Minister of Sport, Glenn Ghost Phillip. In the past, that ministry has granted, on numerous occasions, permission to use the facilities, to the Labour Party candidate for the area, Marcella Liburd.

It is therefore unfortunate that the Ministry of Sport has found it fit to refuse permission to Jonel Powell for his Rally on Saturday.

This action however has only strengthened the resolve of the people of Central Basseterre to opt for change, come the next election and to elect the PAM and Team Unity candidate, Jonel Powell to be their next Member of Parliament.

Mr. Powell wishes to assure everyone that the Whistle Stop is definitely still on as scheduled, and more information will be provided about the venue for the Rally. Supporters should note that transportation will be provided for those without vehicles. They are also reminded that it all starts at 3:00pm, from just outside Patsy Allers Playing Field.

Everyone is therefore invited turn out to show their support to Powell and the people of Central Basseterre, by participating in this pre-election Whistle Stop and Rally with the Nu Vybz Band. Stay tuned for the venue where the rally will be held.

    PAM…Moving Forward in UNITY!
